Sojourner - a Poem about Sojourner Truth

Sojourner - a Poem about Sojourner Truth

Isabella Baumfree was born

to a big family of 13 children

Somewhere upstate New York

many years ago, in 1797

The family lived in slavery

a sad time in history

Growing up as a child

she had several owners and

cruel treatment stockpiled

by mean, abusive hands

So, before the age of nine

She got sold many times

Isabella falls in love with a slave named Robert

He was owned by the neighboring farmer

Then Isabella and Robert have a daughter

But the slave owner forbids they go to the altar

Then to an older slave she was forced to bear

four more children within the next 10 years

In 1827 New York abolishes slavery

Priorly, she escapes with her infant daughter

And they find safe haven with a kind family

A year later she was able to get back Peter

Her youngest son who had been illegally

sold in the South into the loathsome slavery

In 1843 God called her

Sojourner Truth became her name

She got involved with civil rights leaders

as she moves toward great acclaim

And witnesses at prayer meetings and rallies

right up there on God's green alley

Throughout the remainder of her life

Sojourner Truth spoke out against injustice

upon women & African Americans alike

So, let's pay tribute to a renowned abolitionist

And commemorate a good Christian

whose life fulfilled a rightful mission
