Sojourner - a Poem about Sojourner Truth Isabella Baumfree was born to a big family of 13 children Somewhere upstate New York many years ago, in 1797 The family lived in slavery a sad time in history Growing up as a child she had several owners and cruel treatment stockpiled by mean, abusive hands So, before the age of nine She got sold many times Isabella falls in love with a slave named Robert He was owned by the neighboring farmer Then Isabella and Robert have a daughter But the slave owner forbids they go to the altar Then to an older slave she was forced to bear four more children within the next 10 years In 1827 New York abolishes slavery Priorly, she escapes with her infant daughter And they find safe haven with a kind family A year later she was able to get back Peter Her youngest son who had been illegally sold in the South into the loathsome slavery In 1843 God called her Sojourner Truth became her name She got involved with civil rights leaders as sh...
